BUILDING SKULL PASS title image.
This amazing table was built to accompany the release of the Battle for Skull Pass boxed set. The Hobby Team, part of Games Workshop's Design Studio, is renowned for the amazing terrain it makes, and this table is no exception. Below and on the following pages, you will see some of the steps that went into the creation of this awesome table.

First, the Hobby Team mapped out the table on several layers of insulation foam and foamcore to get the layout right. Next, they cut along the contour lines to make different elevations and then glued all the sheets of material to a wooden frame.

To make the road itself, the Hobby Team took a very thin sheet of insulation foam and placed it over the exposed foamcore (shown before). Next, they used a dull pencil to press-in shallow lines to suggest a brick road, with the road edging made from small wood strips. The Hobby Team also gouged out parts of the road and glued sand and other rubble to these areas to show damage. Next, they placed the insulation foam over the river, cut out the section that went over the river, and then sloped the edges of the insulation foam so they formed the shore of river. They blended all of these joins with a little filler (spackle), sand, and small pebbles.

Once all the terrain had been built and sand glued to the table, the Hobby Team painted the whole thing with black latex house paint (spray paint will eat through insulation foam).

With the basic parts of the table assembled and primed, the Hobby Team set about painting it. They worked up from dark browns to light browns in the earthy areas, and dark greys to light ones for the rubble and stonework.
